MDP wins Gan council seat, PNC secures one out of three seats in by-election

The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) won the Laamu Gan council seat while the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) lost two of the three seats contested in Friday's by-election.

The by-election was held on Friday to elect a councillor for Laamu Gan, a women councillor for Mulak and the President of Kudahuvadhoo council. PNC fielded candidates for all three seats while MDP contested for the Kudahuvadhoo and Gan councils.

MDP candidate for Gan council Afsal Jaufar won the election by a margin of 250 votes. He got 894 votes while PNC candidate Ali Nasheed got 644 votes.

Reema Hussain, an independent candidate, won the women's seat for Mulak with 336 votes. She is the president of the Jumhooree Party (JP) women's wing. Her opponent, PNC candidate Mizna Thaufeeq, got 282 votes.

Jadullah Hameed of PNC became the President of Kudahuvadhoo council with 826 votes. Abdullah Jameel, who contested from the MDP, got 624 votes. The former President of the council belonged to the ruling coalition's Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

The by-election of these councils had to be held after some former councillors resigned and took up other positions.
