The first couple inaugurated a programme today to plant five million trees in five years.
The project was launched during a ceremony held at the Lonuziyaarai Park this morning on the occasion of World Environment Day. Planting five million trees in five years was a campaign pledge of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef and his wife as well as the Speaker of Parliament and other senior officials took part in today's ceremony.
A presentation was made during the ceremony about the types of trees to be planted under the project.
They include tropical almond, orange jasmine, orchid trees, huba plants, plumeria, sapodilla, soursop or guayabano, neem, looking-glass mangrove and red bead trees.
Other types of trees are also due to be planted under the project. Tree planting activities are to be carried out in all schools and government-owned companies.
