Mahchangolhi North MP Ibrahim Mohamed (Janaab) from the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) has said that even if the leadership of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) calls for praise to God, it should be rejected.
During yesterday's parliamentary session, debate was held on a bill proposed by Galolhu North MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudoo) to amend the law to allow for changes in residency without a five-year waiting period. During the debate, Janaab characterized the bill as an attempt to grant Maldivian citizenship to foreigners.
"I say to my honorable brothers and fellow members, even if the current leadership of the MDP tells us to say 'Alhamdulillah' (Praise be to God), we must refuse. This is because their intentions are malicious," Janaab told the floor.
Janaab repeatedly claimed the bill was submitted with the intent of granting Maldivian citizenship to "secular" individuals. However, the bill contains no such provisions.
Janaab has frequently accused the MDP of being secular and working to undermine Islam in the Maldives during various sessions. The MP, who is also the brother-in-law of President Mohamed Muizzu, consistently alleges in parliamentary sittings that all bills, resolutions, and motions submitted by the party are proposed with "bad intentions."
Many have condemned Janaab's remarks for inciting religious hatred. Despite the backlash, he has been posting on X, urging people to share the video of his speech as much as possible.
"I will oppose anything that comes from a leadership pursuing a non-Islamic agenda," Janaab wrote.
The current Chairperson of the MDP is former President Mohamed Nasheed, who survived an assassination attempt in May 2021, believed to be carried out by Islamic extremists.
