Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla's daughter Mariyam Sajidha has been appointed as a board member of the government-owned State Electricity Company (STELCO).
Sajidha was appointed to the post on May 27, according to the company's website. Sajidha is also the wife of Felidhoo MP Adam Zahir from the 20th People's Majlis.
Sajidha was appointed to the board as a non-executive member, STELCO's website stated.
Moreover, according to a brief resume shared on the company's website, Sajidha holds a BA in accounting from the UK's Hertfordshire University and a Master's degree in business administration from Coventry University.
Sajidha has many years of experience in the accountancy field, the website stated.
A social media post from STELCO about Sajidha's appointment as a board member drew widespread criticism. Many people criticised the company by linking high electricity bills for the last two months to the appointment of a family member of the Majlis Speaker.
