The membership of standing committees was approved at the Parliament floor on Monday.

As the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) has a supermajority in the 20th People’s Majlis, the party also has a majority of seats in committees. However, MPs from all parties represented in Parliament were included in committees in line with Parliament’s rules.

The composition of the committee based on talks among parliamentary groups was passed unanimously at yesterday’s sitting by the 83 MPs who attended and participated in the vote.

Composition of some important committees

The Security Services Committee (241 Committee) is one of the most important and powerful among Parliament’s standing committees. The committee is specified in the Constitution.

The Public Accounts Committee is another important committee, which would review issues submitted to Parliament in relation to the state treasury and finances.

The State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Committee, which has the power to oversee and hold state companies to account, is also an important committee.

241 Committee

The total 13 MPs on this committee includes eight PNC MPs. One MP each from other parties and an independent MP are also on the committee.

PNC MP for Eydhafushi Ahmed Saleem (Redwave Saleem) was elected as chair of the committee at the first meeting held yesterday. PNC MP for Inguraidhoo Ibrahim Falah was elected as the deputy chair.

Public Accounts Committee

Of the 11 MPs on this committee, aside from two Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) MPs and one Jumhooree Party (JP) MP, the rest are PNC MPs.

JP MP for Maamigili Qasim Ibrahim was elected as chair of the committee with MP Saleem as the deputy chair. Qasim was nominated as chair by Saleem and elected with the support of other PNC MPs.

PNC's parliamentary group approved the JP leader's election as PAC chair after Qasim made a request to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

Of the 11 MPs on this committee, aside from two MDP MPs and one Maldives National Party (MNP) MP, the rest are PNC MPs.
