China's Xizang Autonomous Region has donated 1,500 tonnes of mineral water to Maldives.

The shipment was handed over to Maldives by Chinese Ambassador Wang Lixin. Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer accepted the donation on behalf of Maldives.

The shipment of water will be used to provide clean drinking water to the island during water shortages.

This is a shipment of water promised by a senior Chinese official during a visit to the Maldives late last year.

The shipment arrived in Maldives in March, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement at the time.

The statement was issued after rumours circulated claiming that a shipment of an expensive brand of mineralized water had been brought for use at the presidential palace.

The Foreign Ministry did not reveal the brand of water donated by China.
