President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has welcomed the application of arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant at the International Criminal Court (ICC).
ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan sought arrest warrants on Monday for Netanyahu, Gallant and the leaders of Hamas.
In a post on his official X account last night, President Muizzu called the move a significant step in the quest for justice for the Palestinian people.
No country is above international law and those carrying out war crimes in the occupied Palestinian territory must be held accountable, he wrote.
"As a State Party to the Rome Statute, the Maldives is confident that the Prosecutor's Office has gathered enough evidence to prove Israel has conducted war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. We will explore every avenue to support the people of Palestine in the international arena," the President said.
The arrest warrants for Netanyahu and his Defense Minister were sought over the starvation of civilians as a weapon of war, intentional attacks against a civilian population and crimes against humanity.
More than 34,000 Palestinians have been killed in the genocide started by Israel on October 7, 2023. Most of the dead were women and children. Israel has also demolished many hospitals in Palestine. The country has been pursuing tactics used for ethnic cleansing.
