Four seats for PNC, one each for MDP and Democrats in Saturday’s by-elections

The ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) won four seats in six council by-elections held by the Elections Commission (EC) on Saturday as the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and The Democrats each took one seat.

The polls were held to elect the council president of the Meemu Madduvari island council, council members for the Haa Alif Utheemu, Noonu Landhoo and Noonu Velidhoo councils, and female members for the Haa Alif Thakandhoo and Raa Innamaadhoo council.

Mohamed Azim Ali from The Democrats was elected as president of the Madduvari council. PNC’s Ibrahim Sunan and Abdulla Abdul Razzaq were elected respectively to the Utheemu and Velidhoo councils. MDP’s Abdulla Arif was elected to the Landhoo council.

PNC’s Sameena Mohamed was elected to as the female member of the Thakandhoo council whilst Aishath Samaha from the same party was elected as the female member of the Innamaadhoo council.

The ruling PNC also won a supermajority of seats in the April 21 parliamentary elections. PNC and coalition partners secured about 76 seats from the 93-member People’s Majlis.
