President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Monday night called on all political leaders to unite and move forward with the nation, promising not to discriminate against any Maldivian citizen.
Speaking at a rally held to celebrate the landslide victory in Sunday's parliamentary elections, the President reiterated his pledge not to treat any citizen differently based on political ideology.
"Every Maldivian citizen is equal before me. That citizen is important to me regardless of belonging to any party. I have love and respect in my heart for each of them. So I won't discriminate against anyone. There won't be any action taken against them based on their political views," the President said.
President Muizzu called on political leaders to move forward with the work of developing the nation.
"I wish now to leave aside differences of opinion. The election is over. I call very respectfully and happily to all political leaders and all political parties as well, let us move forward, this country belongs to all of us. This country belongs to every beloved Maldivian citizen. So let's everyone roll up our sleeves and go forward together with friendship. God willing, we will all have that joy," the President appealed.
In addition, the President said he would work harder than the past five months. He also called on his cabinet to work hard.
"These past five months were nothing. You would now have to stay awake for 24 hours. I'm saying seriously. I want to bring development as the public wanted," the President said, addressing the cabinet.
The ruling People's National Congress (PNC) won 66 seats in the Majlis elections. The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) only won 12 seats.
