The Elections Commission (EC) has asked to submit complaints after a ruling party candidate for the upcoming parliamentary elections publicly threatened workers of the fish factory in Lhaviyani Felivaru island.
During a campaign event of the People's National Congress (PNC), Mohamed Abdul Rahman, contesting for the Hinnavaru seat, said opposition supporters working at the factory should be forced to vote for government candidates.
Abdul Rahman (Hunter Ahmed) said the government should contact the opposition supporters working in the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) factory in Felivaru and tell them to cooperate.
If they do not cooperate, action should be taken against them, Abdul Rahman added.
He said that it would be difficult to win the Hinnavaru seat without taking such a measure and asked ministers to request President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to give the candidate the power to control the Felivaru workers.
In a post on X, EC President Fuwad Thowfeek said the rhetoric was unacceptable and urged to submit the complaints form to the National Complaints Bureau.
The EC has, so far, received 41 complaints regarding the parliamentary elections scheduled for later this month.
EC member and spokesperson Hassan Zakariya told Adhadhu that out of the 41 cases, 38 cases have been investigated and three cases are ongoing.
He said the complaints are related to campaigning, election staff, voting rights, registration and candidacy.
