The current government is shaking the foundation of democracy by trying to crush dissent and eliminate opponents, former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said.
In an exclusive interview with Adhadhu in Fuvahmulah, Solih said the government is obstructing freedom of expression and limiting the space for political activities.
"They began this by obstructing the press. They are continuing to undermine the powers of the Parliament. Now they are trying to eliminate the ideologies and opinions of political parties, trying to crush dissent. They are shaking the foundation of democracy,” he said.
If the government wins the majority in Parliament, they will restore injustice and oppress the people by changing laws, Solih warned.
"So the people must think about this before voting in the parliamentary elections and it is essential for MDP to win Parliament majority to maintain democracy," he said.
Looking back at the policies carried out in the past five years, Solih said there were no difficulties in carrying out political activities during his government.
Solih said his government tried not to obstruct political activities and worked to provide the space and security for political activities.
His remarks came after police used force to prevent the inaugural congress of the People's National Front (PNF).
PNF leaders accused President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu of directly ordering police to be deployed to Ghiyasuddin School on Tuesday night.
