Four suspects including two employees of the Maldives Airports Company Ltd (MACL) have been arrested over an attempt to smuggle about 5kg of drugs out of the airport.
The drugs were found inside luggage that had been cleared against procedure on March 15, police said in a message sent to the media. A total of 4.5kg of heroin and methamphetamines were inside the luggage, police said.
Aside from the two MACL staff, a Pakistani national and the person who came to collect the luggage were also taken into custody, police said.
However, when they were taken for remand hearings, the court released the prime suspect, police said. The prime suspect was a senior MACL official, police said.
"Many employees" of MACL were involved in the case, police said, adding that the matter was under investigation.
