An internal inquiry will be carried out into an incident that occurred at a checkpoint in Hulhumale' phase two, police said on Tuesday.

The inquiry was announced by Police Spokesperson Ahmed Shifan in a post on X. CCTV footage of the incident that occurred on Monday night emerged on social media as police faced various accusations.

"This incident occurred when a cycle fell while attempting to drive past police at a vehicle checkpoint set up in Hulhumale' phase two and accelerated when it reached the checkpoint. The cycle was driven by a person without a license and the injured persons were treated at the Hulhumale' hospital last night," police said about the incident.

The video shows a motorcycle drive past the traffic checkpoint after a police officer ordered it to stop. As the cycle drove past him, the police officer could be seen aiming an object in his hand towards the back of the woman in the back seat of the cycle.

The cycle could then be seen veering and falling down with the two people. It is unclear from the video whether the fall was caused by the actions of the police officer.

On social media, the police officer was accused of attacking the woman in the back seat of the motorcycle. A group of people also gathered to protest outside the Hulhumale' police station over the incident on Monday night.
