President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has called on Israel to fully comply with the resolution for ceasefire adopted by the UN Security Council on Monday.
Several resolutions have been submitted to the Security Council since October 7, 2023, but none of them were adopted by the 15-member council.
There are five permanent members in the council with veto power. All previous resolutions on the issue were vetoed by the United States.
However, Monday's resolution was passed after the United States refrained from vetoing. Instead, the Israeli ally abstained from the vote.
In a post on X to welcome the resolution, Muizzu wrote that it had been "long overdue."
"We demand that the resolution adopted today is fully implemented, and call upon Israel to fully comply by it," he added.
He stated that the international community must uphold this momentum to find a permanent ceasefire and an immediate end to the perpetuation of genocidal acts.
The resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire during the fasting month of Ramadan was approved with the votes of 14 members of the Security Council.
The resolution also called for the release of "hostages" in Gaza. The attacks on Gaza by Israel have martyred more than 32,000 people, mostly children and women.
Israel has blocked the supply of water, food and other humanitarian assistance which has pushed the north of Gaza into famine.
