President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said that amnesty and relief for those arrested or convicted of child sexual abuse is unacceptable.
This comes as the public raised concerns after several suspected child sex offenders, remanded in custody pending trial, had been granted relief by the courts.
In a post on X, Muizzu wrote that the government has been requesting the Prosecutor General's Office to appeal such decisions without delay.
"... It is unacceptable to pardon or grant relief and release those arrested, or convicted of child sexual abuse. The government is requesting the PG to appeal such decisions without delay. Let us all work together to make this society free from the evil claws of such evil people,” he wrote.
There have been several social media posts claiming that suspected child sex offenders are being given concessions through the courts. However, the government has also been facing criticism over the issue.
