The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has condemned calls by former Indian MP Subramanian Swamy for India to send soldiers to oust the government of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

Subramanian called for changing the Maldivian government after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu asked the Indian government to withdraw Indian soldiers in the Maldives before March 15.

The MP, who belongs to the opposition party in India, asked in a post on X whether the country’s Prime Minister would accept the Maldives’ proposal or send the Indian army, airforce and navy.

In a statement released in response to the post, the MDP condemned Subramanian’s remarks as an irresponsible statement made to incite hatred between the people of Maldives and India.

The MDP said the relationship between the Maldives and India is based on mutual respect and people-to-people ties. Such remarks do not deserve any consideration, the party said.

The MDP called on Subramanian to not use the Maldives in Indian domestic political matters.

"Unsavoury characters" such as Subramanian have come between India-Maldives ties because of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's policies, the MDP said.
