Climate change is a reality and all Maldives can do is to adapt and try to mitigate the damage, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said.
In an interview with CGNT, Muizzu said development projects should take measures to mitigate the damage caused by climate change. Maldives is already working towards that, he said.
"Climate change is a reality. We are not denying anything related to it. But the most important thing is to adapt to the change and take appropriate measures to prepare for it," Muizzu said.
He was responding to a question from the CGNT journalist who said that about 80 percent of Maldives could be submerged within the next 30 years due to climate change.
The President cited the program to plant five million trees across the country as one example of the country’s response to climate change.
He also stated that the Rasmale' city being built in Fushidhiggaru lagoon will be reclaimed with a height of three meters from the sea level.
