The government will try to provide Aasandha services in countries besides India, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said.
The government health insurance scheme that covers medical treatment for Maldivian citizens is currently available overseas from hospitals in neighbouring India and Sri Lanka.
Briefing the press at the Velana International Airport on his visit to China upon his return, President Muizzu said he was working to make Aasandha services available in Thailand and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
"Instead of making Aasandha available by going to medical facilities in a particular country, we will expand Aasandha, God willing, to better quality countries, UAE and Thailand," President Muizzu said.
The government was working towards providing Aasandha services in those countries with accommodation costs to be covered, he said.
After making the announcement, President Muizzu said the previous government was seen to be dependent on a particular country in making every decision. He was referring to India despite not naming a particular country. The opposition at the time alleged that Indian influence was high in the previous government.
After departing on January 7, President Muizzu concluded his trip to China on Friday. Twenty agreements were signed between China and the Maldives during the visit, including ones on strengthening ties in tourism and developing roads and utilities in Gulhifalhu, Giraavaru and Fushidhiggaru.
