Azim assures cooperation with government if elected mayor

The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) mayoral candidate Adam Azim has assured that he would cooperate with the government if he wins the Male' city council by-election on Saturday.

He was speaking during a debate of the mayoral candidates hosted by the Public Service Media (PSM).

"We are not coming to fight with the government. I am coming to work with the government. With all institutions. The constitution does not say we have to fight. The constitution says the mayor should act in accordance with the law and the president should act in accordance with the law," Azim stated.

"We cannot accept a leader who threatens the people in that way. This should be a place where the rule of law prevails, I want to assure the people that the only thing I will not cooperate with is wasting."

He reiterated that the Fushidhiggaru lagoon project launched by the government is a waste for now.

"Even now they are wasting 5 billion by doing the work for 10 billion while MTCC can do it for 5 billion. I am saying don't waste, don't waste people's money. If I am elected mayor, I will work with everyone to solve these issues," Azim said.

Azim also proposed policies to address the increase in foreigners. He pledged to identify the foreigners in Male' and criticized the government's decision to change rules related to foreign workers.

"They have decided to bring in 10,000 more people while these problems exist. I think the problems should be solved first before bringing more people here. I will advocate for that in the future."

Similar to vehicle carrying capacity, the number of foreigners who can live in Male' should be identified and the undocumented foreigners should be regularised, he said.

Azim said he would directly monitor the illegal activities of foreigners and promised to find a solution.

He accused the government of coming to power by lying and said that he would not continue to give that opportunity.
