President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has questioned the opposition Mayoral candidates whether they can put aside their party and put the people first.
He said this while speaking at the rally to launch the manifesto of the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) candidate Aishath Azima.
The President highlighted some things that could not be fulfilled while he was mayor due to to lack of cooperation from the government.
He claimed that his government wants to champion the decentralization system and warned against electing a candidate who would not cooperate with the government.
"While development projects are being done through the council, what if the people elect a candidate that doesn't cooperate with the government or a candidate that comes from a party that doesn't want to cooperate?" he said.

Mayoral candidates.
The five candidates for the Male' city mayoral post include three candidates from political parties and two independent candidates. Besides the PNC, the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the Democrats have also fielded candidates.
Muizzu questioned whether candidates from the MDP and the Democrats could oppose the party's views and put the people first.
"Do you have the courage to go to the people in the remaining six days and tell them that we will not do what the party says even if we are running on the party ticket?" he asked.
The President reiterated statements about the rumors regarding opposition efforts to impeach him.
"Look at how the MDP is working in parliament today. The people elect a government through a democratic system. The government is doing its work. But since they hold the majority, they are working with the other party to destroy the system."
Despite Muizzu's repeated statements about impeachment, the MDP has not decided to impeach the President.
"I want to say with absolute certainty that the MDP parliamentary group has no stand on it yet. And we have not put it on the agenda or debated it," Deputy Speaker and Hoarafushi MP Ahmed Saleem said last week.
"And as a party, the MDP has not instructed us on the matter. But impeachment is permitted by the Constitution. The Constitution ensures the power of the people,” he added.
The rumors about an impeachment attempt began circulating after MDP amended the rules on the impeachment process.
