The most important task that Parliament should undertake at present is impeaching President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, Ihavandhoo MP Mohamed Shifau from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has said, vowing to propose a vote of no-confidence to the main opposition party's parliamentary group.

The current government lacks legal legitimacy, Shifau said today while debating a report forwarded by the General Affairs Committee after reviewing amendments proposed to Parliament's procedural rules on impeaching the President and Vice President.

"What we know for certain from the views being expressed is that the most important work that Parliament needs to do today is the impeachment of the President. God willing, I will submit it to the PG [parliamentary group]," Shifau said.

Shifau accused the government of ignoring all laws passed by Parliament and ratified by the former President. The Economic Ministry's decision yesterday to lift a ban on unskilled Bangladeshi laborers was enough proof of that, he added.

"I see the proud Maldivian flag ask MPs whether we should just hand over the government to people who have no respect for the constitution. I see the Maldivian flag ask whether the time has come to begin work on impeaching the President," he said.

Shifau went on to say that the government was also exerting influence over the judiciary and that President Muizzu sees former President Abdulla Yameen as a threat to his rule.
