PPM wins most seats in council by-elections

Candidates from the ruling coalition's Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) won most seats in council by-elections held on Saturday.

By-elections took place for vacant seats on the Haa Alif Kelaa, Noonu Maafaru and Alif Dhaal Hagnaameedhoo island councils as well as the Maafaru Women Development Committee (WDC).

PPM candidates won the Kelaa and Maafaru island council seats and Maafaru's WDC seat. An independent candidate was elected to the Hagnaameedhoo island council seat.

The PPM, the island councils and focal points have confirmed the victories.

The Elections Commission (EC) announced provisional results on Saturday night.
