The Parliament Committee on National Security Services or the 241 committee today decided to investigate the arrest of alleged spies from the Velana International Airport.
The matter was on the agenda for the 241 Committee meeting scheduled at 10 am today. Earlier reports suggested that the police seized spy cameras and other spy equipment from the suspects.
The two suspects were identified as Mod Owais, 26, and Gogda Haroon, 41. They are Indian nationals.
The pair was arrested on August 29, 2022 and remanded in custody for 10 days. However, they were allowed to fly back to India on September 9 when the remand period ended.
Police, at the time, said they could not find enough evidence to charge them.
The former opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), which is now in the governing coalition, submitted an emergency motion over the issue.
Former Maavashu MP Mohamed Saeed, who is the current Economic Minister, moved the motion and made serious accusations against the police and the government.
He claimed that the case report was changed and security measures were not strengthened at the airport after the incident.
However, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) which holds the Parliament majority rejected the motion.
