India's Lucky Global Projects Pvt Ltd has been awarded the contract to provide waste management equipment to 45 islands in four atolls.
The Environment Ministry said the waste management equipment will be provided for the islands in Noonu, Raa, Baa and Lhaviyani atolls.
The project is funded through the Maldives Clean Environment Project run by the ministry with the assistance of the World Bank.
Lucky Global was awarded the contract to bring in equipment worth MVR 12.9 million. The equipment includes balers and strapping tools for sealing garbage, bottle crushers, hand truck trolleys for hauling garbage and hydraulic hand pallet trucks.
The company has been given four months to deliver the items.
Speaking after signing the agreement, Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim said the project is a priority area in the first 14 weeks of the new government.
The islands to be provided with waste management equipment are those that have a waste management center and those that are undergoing upgradation or are in the tender stage.
The Environment Ministry expressed hopes that the islands will have the capacity to manage waste and resources in a sustainable manner by the end of the project.
