Youth Minister Ibrahim Waheed (Asward), along with the Tourism and Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim have resigned from their posts.
Various sources have confirmed to Adhadhu that both Asward and Thoriq tendered their resignations today.
A total of nine cabinet ministers, including Asward and Thoriq, resigned today. The specific reasons behind these mass resignations remain unclear at this time.
The ministers who have resigned are:
- Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Abdulla Khaleel
- Minister of Social and Family Development, Dr. Aishath Shiham
- Minister of Defence, Ghassan Maumoon
- Minister of Local Government, Adam Shareef
- Minister of Health, Abdulla Nazim
- Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr. Maryam Mariya
- Minister of Tourism, Thoriq Ibrahim
- Minister of Youth, Ibrahim Waheed (Asward)
- Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Ali Haidar
- Minister of Dhivehi Language, Adam Naseer
Reports suggest that additional ministers may have also stepped down; however, their identities have not yet been officially confirmed.
This wave of ministerial resignations follows a significant electoral defeat for the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) in the recent local council elections.
Furthermore, the public overwhelmingly rejected the government's proposal to synchronize parliamentary and presidential elections during the referendum held alongside the council polls.
