Former CEO of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) Adam Azim, who is running for the vacant post of Male' City Mayor, has said that he will not cooperate with the government if it involves wasting people's money.

He made the remarks while speaking at a rally held to officially launch the campaign of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidates contesting for the three vacant seats in the Male' City Council.

"What is this other than wasting the people's money? If I become mayor, I will not participate in any such decisions," Azim said repeatedly.

He criticized the government's decision to begin the new Fushidhiggaru project instead of prioritizing the completion of utilities on Gulhifalhu, Giraavaru Falhu and Uthuru Thila Falhu where land has been allocated for housing purposes by the former government.

He said the Fushi Dhiggaru project is not an option at the moment and that the new government should work to complete the projects started by the previous MDP government and fulfill the needs of the people.

"I assure the people of Male' that we will do everything we can to ensure that you get the land given to you by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih," he said.

During the previous government, Azim served as the Managing Director of Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) and later as the Managing Director of MTCC.

MTCC made remarkable progress with him as Managing Director. He expanded the bus service in the Male' region, introduced mini bus services and launched RTL ferry services.

The Male' City Mayor post became vacant after former Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu took oath as President on November 17. The seats of Maafannu South, Central Henveiru and Henveiru South are also vacant as councilors resigned to take up positions in the new government.

The Elections Commission (EC) has decided to hold the by-election on January 13.
