Water supply resumed on the islands of Addu city on Saturday night after a problem at the water plant was resolved.

The most populous city after Male' was left without running water since Thursday.

The equipment that was damaged was the VFD drive, which was essential for circulating water produced by the plant and regulating the volume and speed of water released from the plant.

Spare parts were taken from Male' twice to repair the damage. Water services resumed last night after the problem was fixed.

Fenaka Corporation blamed the failure to regularly repair the plant for the water outage in Addu, which is home to about 20,500 people.

"What we've seen so far shows that this water issue was faced in Addu city because repair work that should have been carried out under a schedule had not been a priority and because of the failure to comply with the timeline in reports sent by the Utility Regulatory Authority after inspections with instructions to solve problems that need to be fixed," Fenaka Corporation said in a statement.

The water supply stopped completely shortly after the problem occurred at the water plant because of the lack of an adequate volume of water stocks, the company said.

Efforts are underway to increase water storage to ensure that such service interruptions in Addu city do not occur in the future, Fenaka said.

The replacement for the damaged VFD drive was provided by the Male' Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC), which also offered expert assistance in resolving the problem, according to Fenaka.
