Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed has assured that Maldives will not be affected by a ban on exporting onions from India.

In a post on X, Saeed said the friendly nations would always give priority to Maldives.

India imposed a ban on exports of onions until March 31, 2024, as a measure to curb inflation ahead of next year's Lok Sabha elections.

There was no restriction on importing any basic goods into Maldives, said Saeed who also served as the Economic Minister during the former Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) government.

Foreign and trade relations with neighboring India weakened during that administration under former President Abdulla Yameen.

"Changes in the world food market or export policies of individual countries happen at different times," Saeed wrote in his post.

He further said that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's top priority is to establish food security for the people and it will be achieved with a sustainable total solution.
