An emergency motion has been submitted to the Parliament calling on the government to disclose the agreement for the removal of Indian military personnel from Maldivian territory.

The motion moved by Baarashu MP Ahmed Abdulla called on the government to disclose the agreement for the removal of Indian troops and reveal the number of Indian troops in Maldives under military visas.

The emergency motion also called for the disclosure of agreements with India that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu had earlier accused of endangering the Maldives' sovereignty.

The motion highlighted that Muizzu had made alarming remarks to international media about the presence of armed Indian soldiers in Maldives.

"I call on the government to disclose to the people and Parliament the agreements that have undermined Maldives sovereignty and loss of independence. I further call for the disclosure of the agreement mentioned by President Muizzu following his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at COP28," the motion stated.

After concluding the COP summit, the President said at a press conference that he had officially asked the Indian government to withdraw the troops the day after he was sworn in as President.

"So it has been officially submitted. And in all the work done before that and the work done up till today, the Indian government has agreed to withdraw the Indian troops," he said.

The emergency motion was passed by 33 out of 36 MPs present.

At a press briefing yesterday, Muizzu revealed that the government is unsure about the exact number of Indian military personnel in the Maldives as figures provided by different authorities do not match,

After initially refusing to answer the questions, Muizzu said a committee comprising the Foreign Ministry, Defense Ministry and the President's Office was working on the matter.

"The documents show different numbers at different times, going from 77 to 89, which is not clear either. We do not have clear information yet. The number might be higher," he said.

Muizzu earlier evaded questions about the discrepancy between the official figure and claims made during the presidential election campaign that there were thousands of Indian troops in the Maldives.
