A woman who was arrested in connection with the murder and abandonment of a newborn in Alif Dhaal Dhigurah has been remanded in custody.
The court remanded her for the duration of the trial when summoned to a hearing on Monday.
A police spokesperson told Adhadhu that the foreign national was arrested at the Velana International Airport while attempting to leave the country on Sunday.
Police first told the media that the suspect is the mother of the baby, but later said that information was provided mistakenly.
The newborn was found in a bag at the island's wasteyard. The baby was found dead, the police said, citing doctors who examined the newborn.
The body was found by a foreign worker of the island's Waste Management Center, Ibrahim Usman, Dhigurah council president, told Adhadhu. The site has since been cordoned off for the police investigation, he said.
The island's garbage dump is located away from residential neighborhoods.
