The Progressive Party of Maldives-People's National Congress (PPM-PNC) coalition will contest next year's parliamentary elections with Meedhoo MP Ahmed Siyam Mohamed's Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) and Dhangethi MP Mohamed Nazim's Maldives National Party (MNP), Adhadhu has learned.
Primaries for some of the 93 constituencies will be conducted with the two parties, senior PPM-PNC officials confirmed to Adhadhu.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu agreed with MDA leader Ahmed Siyam Mohamed to include the party in primaries to elect candidates for Noonu atoll and Dhaalu atoll parliament seats.
Some MDA members who are to contest in the joint primaries have also announced their candidacies.
While the constituencies where the MNP will contest are not yet known, efforts are underway to finalize the seats, the PNC coalition's senior officials said.
MDA and MNP endorsed President Muizzu for the second round of the presidential election.
MNP contested in the first round but finished seventh with about 1,900 votes. However, the party got two slots from the new cabinet.
MDA supported former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the first round of the presidential election. However, 72 hours before the second round, the party abandoned Solih and decided to endorse President Muizzu.
Some PNC coalition officials criticized MDA over the decision and opposed giving government posts and parliament tickets to the other two parties.
