President-Elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu pledged on Wednesday to appeal within the first 100 days of his administration a judgment by the International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) that caused the loss of territorial waters in the south of the Maldives.
In a case filed over the maritime boundary between the Maldives and the Chagos islands, ITLOS determined that Mauritius had sovereignty over the archipelago and divided an overlapping area of 92,000 square kilometers.
But the opposition said it was the government's advocacy in the dispute that resulted in the loss of territory, alleging that a letter sent by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih was to blame.
A plan unveiled on Wednesday night for the first 100 days of Muizzu's government stated that the judgment would be appealed.
The ITLOS judgment posed many challenges to President Solih's administration as parties in the ruling coalition expressed concern and opposed the government.
