Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be invited to the swearing-in ceremony of President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, parliament Speaker and former President Mohamed Nasheed has said.
In an interview with The Hindu newspaper, Nasheed said rumors that relations between India and Maldives will weaken under Muizzu's government are not entirely true.
“I met with people from the transition office recently to send an invitation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the swearing-in of the President-elect, and I will take it up this afternoon,” he said.
Nasheed's remarks come as Muizzu's PPP/PNC believes that the government's relationship with India is giving him the opportunity to do many things that could affect the independence of the country.
The Progressive Party of Maldives-People's National Congress (PPM-PNC) coalition and some other parties accuse the incumbent government of being under Indian influence. The government denies the allegations.
Muizzu, who won the September 30 presidential election with 54 percent of the vote, had pledged to send away Indian troops from Maldives.
He said the message from the election results is that the people of Maldives do not want foreign troops to stay in the country.
