Parliament on Wednesday reconstituted standing committees after approving the proportion of seats allocated to political parties and the MPs assigned as members.

According to the paper passed today, the majority of committees was given to the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the majority party in parliament.

The composition:

  • MDP: 64 percent
  • The Democrats: 15 percent
  • Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM): 6 percent
  • People's National Congress (PNC): 3 percent
  • Maldives National Party (MNP): 3 percent
  • Maldives Development Alliance (MDA): 2 percent
  • Jumhooree Party (JP): 2 percent
  • Independents: 3 percent

Despite the allocation, some committees will not have MPs of all parties. One such committee is the state-owned enterprises (SOE) committee, which does not have MPs from the MDA and JP or any independent MPs unaffiliated with a party.

The MDA and JP are not represented in the decentralisation committee either but it has one independent MP. The foreign relations committee has the same composition.

The independent institutions committee and the social affairs committee also do not have MDA, JP or PPM MPs, according to the paper passed today.

The committee on national development and heritage is comprised only of MDP and Democrat MPs.
