Modern democracy is instrumental in preserving our status as an independent nation, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said on Friday.

In his statement on the occasion of the International Day of Democracy, Solih said that it fosters a society where citizens can pursue economic prosperity and live in contentment.

Solih underscored the significant strides the Maldives has made on its path towards democracy. He noted that the assurance of equal opportunities and rights for all citizens in every state-provided service is a cornerstone of societal contentment.

He further asserted that the nation and its people have reaped substantial benefits from the principles enshrined in the constitution, ever since they were formulated and implemented.

Solih emphasized that the bedrock of modern democracy lies in the freedom of the press and freedom of expression.

He acknowledged that the evolution of a free and transparent press environment has significantly bolstered the nation's democratic fabric.

He further noted that while exercising these freedoms, it is crucial to bear in mind the inherent responsibilities and obligations that accompany them.
