The People's National Congress (PNC) presidential candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has pledged government holidays for the last ten days of the fasting month of Ramadan.
In addition to providing government holidays, schools will also be closed for most grades during that period, the Male' city Mayor said. The change will create a two-week holiday including the Eid days.
Meanwhile, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had earlier promised work from home arrangements for government employees during the last ten days of Ramadan.
"As most people spend the last 10 days of Ramadan praying at night, in order to offer convenience to employees, a 'work from home' modality will be arranged for government employees," the manifesto stated.
But Muizzu's pledge is different.
“In our government, I intend to declare the last 10 days of Ramadan as government holidays altogether, so that people can spend a lot of time in night worship,” he vowed to outdo the president’s promise.
With the change, Umrah pilgrims will be able to travel to Saudi Arabia without worrying about holidays, he said. Schools will also be closed for all children under grade eight during that period, he added.
