State Minister for Health, Dr. Shah Abdullah Mahir resigned from the post on Monday.

Dr. Shah was appointed to the post in a slot given to Jumhooree Party (JP). He resigned and joined the Democrats, the party confirmed.

In a letter sent to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Shah said he had left the JP as his political views differed from those of the party.

He acknowledged the opportunities to strengthen the health sector while working in the government but said that challenges have not been resolved despite repeatedly expressing concerns.

"I regret that no solution has been found to the challenges facing the health sector, although I have met and held discussions with you," the letter read.

Shah was among the officials who were suspended over ventilator corruption during the Covid-19 pandemic.

He was suspended by the President's Office but the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) cleared him in the case.
