President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will take part in the September 1 presidential debate by state media, the president's campaign has said.

At her daily press briefing today, campaign spokeswoman for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and allied parties, Mariya Ahmed Didi, assured the president's participation in the debate, which is jointly organized by state media and the Maldives National University (MNU).

"I confirm President Solih's participation in the MNU debate. It will be a place where an academic debate will take place. At universities they will talk about and research policies academically," Mariya said at Sunday's press briefing.

The president's decision to join the debate comes after opposition criticism in the face of uncertainty over his participation.

The Democrats accused the president of making excuses to avoid the debate.
