Thoddoo MP Hassan Shiyan has left The Democrats and rejoined the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
He handed over his membership form to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Friday night. Shiyan was one of the first 13 MPs to leave the MDP to form The Democrats.
“I have changed my mind and rejoined the MDP in line with the opinion of many people in [Thoddoo] constituency and the whole country," Shiyan tweeted.
“Insha Allah, President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih will win this election in one round with a clear majority in Thoddoo constituency,” he said.
Shiyan is the second MP to leave The Democrats. Earlier this month, Kulhudhuffushi MP Yasir Abdul Latheef left The Democrats and rejoined MDP.
The Democrats was formed by MPs loyal to Nasheed after the former president lost the MDP primary to President Solih on January 28.
Hulhudhoo MP Ilyas Labeeb is contesting in the September 9 presidential election on The Democrats' ticket. His running mate is Hussain Amr, former managing director of the State Trading Organization (STO).
