Former Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) President Hassan Lutfi's passport has been seized by the police under a court order.
His passport was seized in connection with the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) corruption scandal.
Lutfi is believed to have received about MVR 4 million out of more than a billion stolen from state coffers in the corruption.
Police obtained an order to seize Lutfi's passport shortly after he returned to Maldives after living abroad for a long time.
He returned to the country on Saturday after spending years in Malaysia.
Lutfi is accused of money laundering and police announced an investigation connected to him in February 2019.
He is currently living in his native Addu city in the south of the country. Lutfi was amongst supporters who greeted opposition presidential candidate Mohamed Muizzu during his visit to the city recently.
Lutfi was appointed to the ACC in 2009. He resigned from his post in June 2019 after the parliament recommended that he be sacked for not attending office.
He left the country for Malaysia following President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's election victory in 2018 and continued taking the salary despite not reporting to work.
