Speaker Mohamed Nasheed on Sunday levelled serious allegations against the Progressive Party of Maldives-People's National Congress (PPM-PNC) presidential candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Gaaf Alif Kolamaafushi for Democrats presidential candidate Ilyas Labeeb, Nasheed said former President Abdulla Yameen, the PPM-PNC's leader, will face a similar situation to himself if Muizzu becomes president.

Yameen will not be able to offer any advice on governance and his life will eventually be in danger, he said.

"If a Muizzu government is formed, then we won't have to go far for an example, here I am. Then what's going to happen to President Yameen - marginalization, sidelining from government affairs and eventually coming to the brink of death," Nasheed said.

Along with Yameen, the entire country will also suffer under a Muizzu administration, he alleged.

"The country's affairs will deteriorate to an extreme level where the country slips from our fingers," he said.

After the allegations against Muizzu, Nasheed urged PPM members to vote for Democrats candidate Ilyas in the presidential election. Nasheed has recently been appealing for support from PPM members and visiting PPM meeting halls during his campaign trips.

At a press conference earlier in the day, Democrats spokesman MP Imthiyaz Fahmy said the party's members would find it difficult to form a coalition with the PPM-PNC if Muizzu reaches the second round of the presidential election. But the party will make a decision then, he said.

At a campaign rally in Fuvahmulah last week, Nasheed urged PPM members to ensure that Democrats "won't be forced to vote for MDP [Maldivian Democratic Party] in the second round."
