President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said the country achieved complete political freedom in all fields over the past five years.

He made these remarks during his address to the nation on the occasion of the 58th anniversary of the Maldives’ independence.

Solih said the nation has made progress by providing the people with comprehensive political, domestic, and foreign freedoms while safeguarding their civil liberties.

He stated that strong ties with the international community are the most significant binding force in defending and preserving the nation’s independence.

He highlighted that these strong relations have enabled the country to accelerate its economic development, making progress toward enhancing individual livelihoods and household revenues.

Emphasizing that protecting and preserving the nation’s sovereignty is the administration’s utmost priority, the President reaffirmed his continued commitment to safeguarding the dignity and honor of the country.

National Awards to 23 recipients

Solih conferred the National Award of Honour on five recipients and the National Award of Recognition on 18 recipients during Wednesday's ceremony.

The recipients of the National Award of Honour were presented with commemorative shields and badges, while the National Award of Recognition recipients received commemorative plaques.

These awards are conferred annually to acknowledge and commend the efforts of individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the development of the nation and the betterment of society.

Solih also awarded the Order of the Dignified Rule of the Dhiyamigili Dynasty (ODRDD) to Dr. Mustafa Lutfi, Special Advisor on Social Policy at the President’s Office.

Lutfi was honored with the Order of the Dignified Rule of the Dhiyamigili Dynasty (ODRDD) in recognition of his national contributions to the government over a period of more than 34 years.

Lutfi’s invaluable contributions to the education sector of the Maldives were also acknowledged, including shaping the education system that the Maldives sees today and his numerous efforts to train teachers.

The official Independence Day ceremony was held at the Maldives Centre for Social Education (MCSE).

The ceremony was attended by First Lady Fazna Ahmed, Cabinet Ministers, senior judiciary officials, parliamentarians, foreign dignitaries, and foreign diplomats stationed in the Maldives.

Solih and Fazna also attended the flag ceremony at Republic Square early on Wednesday morning.

The Maldives celebrates its Independence Day annually on July 26.
