President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has criticized opposition campaign tactics after a person waiting to greet the president in Meemu Muli yelled at him.

A woman wearing a blue dress and yellow headscarf yelled at the president while he was shaking hands with supporters in Muli on Saturday.

Solih listened to the woman for some time and moved on but the woman did not stop yelling. A campaign against Solih was seen in an island on Sunday as well.

Speaking in Meemu Dhiggaru as part of his campaign tour, Solih claimed his rivals were still using the same tactics used by his Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in the early 2000s.

"Sometimes I think our competitors are in the early 2000s. We are seeing some of the work we started doing in some islands during those days. I respectfully request them to stop it and do a properly competitive campaign," he said.

The President said the MDP has moved forward in modern democracy but its rivals are still far behind.

"We started many years ago to bring modern democracy to the Maldives. Today we have reached the point of running a competitive campaign, contesting elections and voting. We have reached that point," he said.

In addition, the President said that the government has carried out the development works needed in Dhiggaru even in the most difficult times.

"Even during the most difficult times for the government, we started the work of protecting the beach and reclaiming the land. The whole world was at a standstill. Maldives was also under lockdown," he said referring to the Covid pandemic.
