The opposition Progressive Party of Maldives-People's National Congress (PPM-PNC) coalition has formed a committee to investigate alleged corruption by the government.
Speaking during a gathering at the PPM office on Wednesday night, the party's vice president and MP Ahmed Shiyam said "the government is stealing so much that the people are getting poorer."
“We have now set up a special committee to look calculate the amounts stolen. We have to set up that committee because there is so much theft,” he said.
Before announcing the committee, Shiyam indirectly criticized the government for allowing former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb to travel overseas.
Adeeb was sentenced to 20 years in prison over the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) corruption scandal.
"The MMPRC [scandal] is the biggest theft in the country. [But] everyone has been sent on summer holiday. He [President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih] is campaigning after giving everyone a holiday," Shiyam said.
