The research will be jointly funded by MPL and NMUC whilst the company will cover the expenses of staff who travel for training and education, he said.
"As the Maldives is on a very important shipping route of the Indian Ocean, the purpose of the research is to find ways to develop the country's maritime industry," Shahid said.
Speaking at the ceremony, MNUC executive chairman Yaacob praised the natural beauty and hospitality of the Maldives. He said a country such as the Maldives needs more ports and noted the importance of further strengthening port operations.
Under the agreement, six MPL employees will have the opportunity to enroll in a bachelors degree level program every year. Employees will also be able to join short training programs.
