China Harbor Engineering Company (CHEC) has been awarded the design and survey of the first phase of the construction of the commercial port in Thilafushi.
Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) signed the contract after President Mohamed Muizzu announced in his presidential address that the Thilafushi commercial port will begin operations in November next year.
The works include a 650-metre quay wall, a 125-metre harbor, an X-ray facility, automated facilities and a bonded warehouse.
MPL said CHEC was awarded the design of the port to be completed within five months.
All previous governments had planned to relocate the Male' commercial port to Thilafushi. However, no government has implemented it.
