The Democrats, formed by supporters of parliament speaker and former president Mohamed Nasheed, has scheduled its inaugural meeting for Wednesday.

The Democrats founder MP Hassan Lateef said the meeting will be held at 8:30 pm on Wednesday at Ghiyasuddin School,

“I warmly welcome the 3560 members who signed up to form this party... more members who want to sign up for the party will also have the opportunity to do so at the rally,” he said.

The creation of The Democrats was proposed by a group of MPs who support Nasheed and left the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

The 3000 signatures needed to form the party were gathered and submitted to the commission on June 1. Since then, Nasheed has also resigned from MDP.

Nasheed has not yet signed up to join The Democrats, but he tweeted that he would be attending the party's inaugural meeting on Wednesday.

According to the Political Parties Act, the party's symbol, colour, logo and constitution should be approved at the inaugural meeting.

The party's interim leadership to organize the first congress would also be elected during the meeting.
