Fuvahmulak City witnessed the rise of a local sensation as Ashraf Hassan clinched his first-ever victory in the highly anticipated "Burunu Shikaaru Challenge." The event saw Ashraf dethrone defending champion and renowned bodyboarding icon Ali Khushruwan, popularly known as Kuda Ayya.
In an exhilarating final heat, Ashraf secured a narrow triumph by a mere 0.66 points. Competing alongside the eventual champion and Kuda Ayya were Ali Sham Raafiu and Aamin Umar Moosa, intensifying the battle for the coveted title.
The initial stages of the heat were spearheaded by Aamin, who set the pace with his performance. However, the final witnessed a flurry of lead changes, culminating in Ashraf seizing the top spot during the last three minutes.
Ashraf's remarkable display earned him a total score of 14.16 points, while Kuda Ayya accumulated 13.50 points, securing the second position. Aamin's impressive efforts granted him third place with 13.20 points, closely followed by Sham with 12.60 points.
In a separate thrilling contest, Aamin emerged as the junior champion, prevailing in a fiercely competitive heat against Iyan Ahmed, Mohamed Kaif, and Mohamed Jareesh Jihad. Notably, this marked the first occasion where only surfers from the National Junior Team participated in a single heat.
Aamin's score of 10.40 points propelled him to victory, leaving Iyan in second place with 9.26 points. Kaif secured the third spot, while Jareesh concluded the heat in fourth position.
This year's "Burunu Shikaaru Challenge" proved to be one of the most fiercely contested local tournaments in recent memory. Each round witnessed awe-inspiring performances by the surfers, with closely contested scores from the quarterfinals onwards.
Although the revered Kuda Ayya couldn't defend his title, he demonstrated his prowess by winning the drop-knee category, amassing an impressive score of 7.40 points. Kuda Ayya had previously emerged victorious in every edition of the "Burunu Shikaaru Challenge" since its inception until this year.
Established a decade ago, the Maldives Bodyboarding Association has been a driving force in nurturing emerging talents and propelling the growth of the sport nationwide. Throughout this time, Kuda Ayya remained an undefeated powerhouse, leaving a trail of victories in every tournament he entered.
However, the 2023 "Burunu Shikaaru Challenge" saw a seismic shift as Ashraf Hassan, a promising product of the association's esteemed youth development program, emerged as Kuda Ayya's formidable opponent. The significance of this momentous occasion cannot be overstated, as it not only ended Kuda Ayya's unbeaten streak but also highlighted the exceptional talent cultivated through the association's programs.
The bond between Kuda Ayya and Ashraf transcended the conventional teacher-student dynamic. As Kuda Ayya imparted his invaluable knowledge and expertise, Ashraf's growth was nurtured during their bodyboarding lessons in Fuvahmulak City. This unique connection adds an emotional dimension to Kuda Ayya's first-ever loss, making it an even more historic and impactful event.
Looking ahead, Ashraf will return to his hometown of Fuvahmulak to participate in the upcoming National Bodyboarding League's second tournament. Notably, the talented surfer showcased tremendous potential during last year's National Championship, narrowly missing out on a spot in the semifinals.
The Fuvahmulak challenge is scheduled to take place from September 21st to 29th, followed by the Thulusdhoo edition from October 13th to 21st. The calendar's final event, the Bandufila Challenge, will be held from November 12th to December 1st.
