Azuham Abdul Shukoor, who confessed to murdering Naeema Moosa in Noonu Manadhoo, has been detained until the end of his trial.
Azuham, 23, was previously remanded to five days in custody when he was taken to court on June 11 for extension of detention.
A police media official told Adhadhu that when Azuham was taken for a remand hearing at the end of the five-day period, the court ordered his detention for the duration of the trial.
The court on June 11 remanded Abdul Wahid Rifas, 21, who was also arrested over the murder, for 30 days, and ordered Hussain Fawaz, 21, to be detained until the end of the trial.
Azuham was the first to be arrested over Naeema's murder. That was on May 26. Rifas was arrested on the same day. Three days later, on May 29, Fawaz was arrested in Hulhumale'.
A private car that they used on the island was seized by the police. The police also found other evidence related to the case.
Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed said that the police found two knives that were used to stab Naeema as well as the clothes worn by the assailants at the time. The evidence was uncovered after it was burned and buried.
Several police forensic experts took part in the murder investigation on the island. DNA samples were also taken from many residents.
When Naeema was found dead, there was a lot of blood on the ground. She was stabbed multiple times.
Naeema was 62 years of age when she died. She was survived by three children. While she was married twice, neither of her husbands are now alive.
