The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on Wednesday criticised the parliament speaker for allowing chaos in the chamber.
Wednesday’s sitting ended after MPs quarrelled over the new composition of committees. The sitting was adjourned in the morning for discussion, but the issue was not resolved when the sitting resumed.
Vilufushi MP Hassan Afeef who was presiding over the sitting did not take any action against the unruly MPs. MDP MPs expressed concern over it during the session as well.
In a statement issued later on Wednesday, the ruling party accused the speaker of being hesitant to follow the rules when MPs disrupt the sitting.
The statement also said the committee issue was tabled for Wednesday after holding three rounds of discussions between political party MPs and independent MPs.
MDP, which also holds parliament majority, said important work needs to be done in the chamber - including amendments to the general elections act such as paving the way for the visually impaired to vote without assistance.
The party called on the MPs and the parliament secretariat to allow for proceedings to go forward.
